Lachung
Know More About Lachung
Lachung — The Most Picturesque Village in Sikkim
Tucked away in the far north of Sikkim at an altitude of 8,600 feet, Lachung is a tiny mountain village that feels like it has been painted straight out of a fairy tale. The word Lachung means "Small Pass" in the Bhutia language — but there is nothing small about the beauty this place holds. Sitting gracefully at the confluence of the River Lachen and River Lachung, both tributaries of the mighty Teesta, the village is surrounded by towering snow-capped Himalayan peaks, sparkling glacial rivers, fruit-laden orchards, tall waterfalls, and lush green valleys that stretch as far as the eye can see. In fact, the legendary British explorer Joseph Dalton Hooker described Lachung as the "most picturesque village in Sikkim" back in 1855 — and more than a hundred and fifty years later, nothing has changed. Traditional wooden homes with colourful prayer flags, friendly Lepcha and Bhutia families, monastery bells ringing in the cold mountain air, and the complete absence of city noise — Lachung is the kind of place where your soul finally gets the rest it has been looking for. It is also the main gateway to two of North Sikkim's most spectacular attractions — the world-famous Yumthang Valley and the legendary Zero Point. With Ababli Tour, your Lachung experience will be perfectly planned, completely hassle-free, and deeply unforgettable.
Top Places to Visit in Lachung
- Yumthang Valley (Valley of Flowers) — The crown jewel of Lachung and one of the most beautiful valleys in all of India. Sitting at 11,800 feet and just 25 km from Lachung, this enormous alpine valley stretches for kilometres across lush green meadows with the Teesta River winding through its heart and snow-covered peaks rising majestically on every side. Between April and June, the entire valley bursts into a breathtaking carpet of red, pink, and white rhododendron blooms — a sight so beautiful it genuinely looks unreal. Even outside the blooming season, the sheer scale and raw natural beauty of Yumthang is enough to leave every visitor completely speechless.
- Yume Samdong — Zero Point — Located 15 km beyond Yumthang at a staggering altitude of 4,724 metres, Zero Point is quite literally the end of the road — the last point of human civilisation before the snow-covered wilderness of the Himalayas takes over completely. The entire landscape here is buried under thick snow for most of the year, and standing at Zero Point surrounded by pure white mountains and the thinnest, crispest air you have ever breathed is one of the most powerful and emotional experiences any traveller can have. This is not just a destination — it is a feeling you carry with you for the rest of your life.
- Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary — Located inside the Yumthang Valley, this stunning sanctuary is home to over 24 different species of rhododendrons spread across the Himalayan slopes. When the flowers bloom between April and June, the entire sanctuary transforms into one of the most colourful and breathtaking natural spectacles in the country. It is a paradise for nature lovers, botanists, and photographers.
- Lachung Monastery (Samten Cheoling) — Perched beautifully on a hilltop above the village, the Lachung Monastery was established in 1880 and is one of the oldest Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim. Its beautiful Tibetan architecture, ancient murals, statues of Buddha and Guru Padmasambhava, and the mesmerising mountain views all around make it a deeply peaceful and spiritual place to visit. The annual Mask Dance festival held here is a wonderfully colourful cultural event.
- Yumthang Hot Springs — Located right at the entrance of Yumthang Valley, these natural hot water springs are a wonderful and surprising treat in the middle of the cold Himalayan landscape. The water is warm and rich in sulphur and is believed by locals to have natural healing and therapeutic properties. A perfect spot to soak your feet and relax before exploring the valley ahead.
- Mount Katao — A stunning Himalayan snow peak located about 30 km from Lachung, offering some of the most breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and Himalayan ranges. The route to Katao passes through beautiful snow-covered landscapes and is a favourite for those who want to experience the dramatic, raw beauty of North Sikkim's high-altitude terrain.
- Bhim Nala Falls & Naga Falls — Two spectacular waterfalls on the mountain roads leading to Lachung, cascading powerfully down from great heights through lush green forests. These falls are most impressive during and after the monsoon season and make for stunning photography stops during your journey to and from Lachung.

- July to September (Monsoon) — Heavy rainfall during the monsoon season makes mountain roads slippery and landslide-prone. Travel to Yumthang and Zero Point is not recommended during this time. Best avoided for a comfortable and safe trip.
