Assam — The Land of Red River and Blue Hills
Stretching gloriously along the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra — one of the greatest rivers in all of Asia — Assam is a land that has been captivating travellers with its extraordinary natural beauty, rich ancient history, vibrant tribal cultures, and world-famous tea gardens for centuries. Known poetically as the Land of Red River and Blue Hills, Assam is the oldest and largest state in Northeast India and the proud gateway to the entire region's Seven Sister States. It is a place of remarkable and breathtaking diversity — where vast golden tea estates stretch endlessly across rolling plains, where ancient temples and Ahom kingdom monuments stand in quiet dignity beside sacred rivers, where some of the world's rarest wildlife roams freely through UNESCO-listed national parks, and where the warmth and generosity of the Assamese people make every visitor feel genuinely welcomed and at home. Whether you come to Assam for the thrill of spotting a one-horned rhinoceros on a jeep safari, the spiritual experience of visiting the ancient Kamakhya Temple, the peace of a slow boat cruise on the Brahmaputra at sunset, or the simple joy of walking through a fragrant tea garden with a fresh cup of Assam tea in your hand — this extraordinary state will give you experiences that are deeply real, deeply beautiful, and impossible to forget. With Ababli Tour, your Assam journey will be perfectly planned, warmly hosted, and genuinely unforgettable from the very first day.
Top Places to Visit in Assam
- Kaziranga National Park — The crown jewel of Assam and one of India's greatest wildlife destinations, Kaziranga is a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to the largest population of the Great Indian One-Horned Rhinoceros in the entire world. Spread across 430 square kilometres of tall elephant grasslands, dense forests, and shimmering wetlands along the Brahmaputra floodplains, the park is also home to Royal Bengal tigers, wild elephants, water buffaloes, swamp deer, and hundreds of bird species. A jeep safari at dawn or an elephant ride through the tall grass in the early morning mist is one of the most thrilling and awe-inspiring wildlife experiences available anywhere in India.
- Guwahati — The largest and most vibrant city in Northeast India, sitting majestically on the southern bank of the Brahmaputra River. Guwahati is the cultural, commercial, and spiritual heart of Assam — home to the sacred Kamakhya Temple, the Umananda Temple on Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra, the Navagraha Temple, the Shankardev Kalakshetra cultural complex, and the fascinating Assam State Museum. The city also offers wonderful riverside cruises on the Brahmaputra, lively local markets, and the best gateway access to all major Northeast India destinations.
- Kamakhya Temple — One of the most important and most powerful Hindu temples in all of India, the Kamakhya Temple sits dramatically atop Nilachal Hill in Guwahati and is dedicated to Goddess Kamakhya — the goddess of desire and one of the most revered tantric deities in the Hindu faith. The temple draws millions of devotees from across India and the world throughout the year and during the grand Ambubachi Mela festival in June, the spiritual energy here is unlike anything you will experience anywhere else. The hilltop location also offers stunning views of the Brahmaputra River flowing below.
- Majuli Island — The world's largest river island, sitting magnificently in the middle of the Brahmaputra River and accessible only by ferry. Majuli is the cultural soul of Assam — a UNESCO World Heritage tentative site and the living centre of the state's ancient Neo-Vaishnavite Satra tradition. The island is home to numerous Satras (monasteries), traditional mask-making villages, bamboo weaving workshops, and a way of life that has remained beautifully unchanged for centuries. Staying overnight in a bamboo hut on Majuli, watching the sun set over the Brahmaputra, and attending a traditional dance performance at a local Satra is one of the most serene and culturally enriching experiences Assam has to offer.
- Sivasagar (Sibsagar) — The ancient capital of the powerful Ahom dynasty that ruled Assam for over 600 years, Sivasagar is one of the most historically rich and fascinating cities in the entire Northeast. The city is surrounded by magnificent Ahom-era monuments including Rang Ghar — one of the oldest amphitheatres in Asia — the spectacular Talatal Ghar royal palace, the beautiful Sivasagar Tank surrounded by three ancient temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu, and Devi, and the deeply moving Charaideo Maidam burial site of Ahom kings and queens which has recently been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A must-visit for every history lover.
- Manas National Park — A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India's most beautiful and biodiverse national parks, located on the foothills of the Bhutan Himalayas in western Assam. Manas is home to tigers, elephants, one-horned rhinos, golden langurs, and the rare pygmy hog — one of the world's most endangered mammals. The park's stunning landscape of lush forests, grasslands, and the sparkling Manas River flowing through it makes for one of the most visually beautiful safari experiences in the country.
- Dibrugarh — Known as the Tea Capital of the World, Dibrugarh is a charming riverside city surrounded by vast and beautiful tea estates that produce some of the finest Assam tea anywhere in the world. The city offers wonderful tea tourism experiences — you can walk through lush green tea gardens, watch the tea-plucking process, visit a tea factory, and end with a tasting of the freshest and most aromatic Assam tea you will ever have in your life. Nearby Digboi — home to Asia's oldest oil refinery established in 1901 — is a fascinating historical and industrial detour.
- Tezpur — Assam's most romantic city, sitting beautifully on the banks of the Brahmaputra and surrounded by ancient ruins, lush hills, and the most spectacular mountain views in the state. Tezpur is filled with ancient temples, beautiful parks, and centuries-old archaeological sites and serves as the most convenient entry point for road journeys into Arunachal Pradesh. The dramatic ruins of Da Parbatia and the beautiful Agnigarh Hill with its breathtaking river views are especially memorable.
- Haflong — Assam's only hill station, sitting at 2,300 feet in the scenic Dima Hasao district. Haflong is a quiet and beautiful destination of misty hills, pine forests, and the lovely Haflong Lake — a perfect place for those seeking a cool and peaceful mountain escape within Assam. The town is also famous for attracting a large number of migratory birds during the winter months, making it a wonderful destination for birdwatching enthusiasts.
- Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary — A small but extraordinary wildlife sanctuary near Guwahati, often called the mini-Kaziranga of Assam. Despite its compact size, Pobitora has one of the highest densities of one-horned rhinos in the world and also offers wonderful sightings of wild buffaloes, wild boars, and a remarkable variety of migratory birds. An excellent and easily accessible wildlife experience for those with limited time in Assam.

Best Time to Visit Assam
- October to April (Autumn, Winter & Spring) — The best and most recommended time to visit Assam. The weather is cool and pleasant, Kaziranga and other national parks are fully open for safaris, wildlife sightings are most frequent, and the tea gardens are at their most beautiful. Major festivals including Magh Bihu in January and Rongali Bihu in April add wonderful colour and energy to any visit during this period.
- November to February (Peak Wildlife Season) — The absolute best time for wildlife safaris. The tall grass in Kaziranga has been cut back, making rhino, tiger, and elephant sightings most frequent and most spectacular. Book safari slots and accommodation well in advance during these peak months.
- June to September (Monsoon) — Assam receives very heavy monsoon rainfall during these months and Kaziranga National Park is officially closed due to flooding. However, the state's landscape becomes lush and dramatically green, the Brahmaputra runs at its most powerful and majestic, and the sacred Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya Temple in June is one of the most remarkable and deeply atmospheric festivals in all of India.
