Cherrapunji — Where the Clouds Touch the Earth
Perched at an altitude of 1,300 metres in the East Khasi Hills of Meghalaya, Cherrapunji — locally known as Sohra — is one of the most extraordinary and magical destinations in all of India. Famous as one of the wettest places on Earth, this incredible town receives some of the highest rainfall anywhere in the world — and that is exactly what makes it so breathtakingly beautiful. Every drop of rain that falls on Cherrapunji turns into something magnificent — a roaring waterfall, a lush green valley, a crystal-clear river, or a misty cloud that wraps itself around the hills like a soft white blanket. Cherrapunji is not just a destination — it is a completely different world. It is a place where ancient Khasi tribal culture lives alongside some of nature's most extraordinary creations — living bridges grown from tree roots, towering waterfalls that plunge hundreds of metres into deep gorges, mysterious limestone caves carved by underground rivers, and green canyon views that stretch all the way across to the plains of Bangladesh. Whether you are a nature lover, an adventure seeker, a photography enthusiast, or someone who simply wants to experience something truly unlike anything they have ever seen before — Cherrapunji will give you all of that and more. Located just 55 km from Shillong, it is a perfect and deeply rewarding addition to any Northeast India trip. Top Places to Visit in Cherrapunji
- Nohkalikai Falls — The most iconic and dramatic waterfall in Cherrapunji, and one of the tallest plunge waterfalls in all of India, cascading from a breathtaking height of 1,120 feet. The sight of the water thundering down into a deep turquoise pool below, surrounded by sheer green cliffs on every side, is one of the most jaw-dropping natural spectacles you will ever witness in your life. The roar of the water can be heard from far away and during the monsoon season when it is in full force, Nohkalikai is truly something from another world.
- Double Decker Living Root Bridge — One of the most unique and awe-inspiring natural wonders in the world, and the single most famous attraction in all of Meghalaya. The indigenous Khasi people of Cherrapunji have spent generations carefully guiding the roots of rubber fig trees to grow across rivers, naturally forming bridges that grow stronger with every passing year. The Double Decker Living Root Bridge features two such bridges stacked one above the other — a feat of ancient bio-engineering that is around 150 years old. Reaching it involves a trek down over 3,500 steps through a lush forest — but when you arrive and see this extraordinary living structure with your own eyes, every step feels completely worth it.
- Seven Sisters Falls (Nohsngithiang Falls) — Seven individual waterfalls flowing side by side down the same limestone cliff face from a height of 315 metres — a sight so magnificent and rare that there is truly nothing else like it anywhere in India. The falls are most powerful and most beautiful during and just after the monsoon season, when all seven streams are in full thundering flow together, creating a spectacle of water and mist that fills the entire valley with sound and beauty.
- Mawsmai Cave — The most accessible and popular cave in Cherrapunji, a fascinating underground world of limestone formations, stalactites, stalagmites, and narrow winding tunnels carved over millions of years by underground rivers. Walking through its well-lit passages is like stepping into a completely different geological universe — cool, mysterious, and endlessly fascinating for visitors of all ages.
- Eco Park & Thangkharang Park — Two beautiful parks sitting on high plateaus above the valleys, offering some of the most spectacular panoramic views in all of Meghalaya. From here you can see the deep green canyons of Cherrapunji, the stunning Kynrem Falls with its three tiers, and on clear days, the wide plains of Bangladesh stretching out far in the distance below. Both parks are wonderful spots for nature walks, photography, and simply soaking in the incredible landscape.
- Arwah Caves — A more adventurous and less-visited cave experience tucked deep within the Law Shynna forest. Arwah Caves are fascinating for their incredible limestone formations and for the ancient marine fossils — shells and fish bones millions of years old — embedded in the cave walls. It is a thrilling and unique experience for those who love a little adventure off the beaten path.
- Mawsynram — Just 15 km from Cherrapunji lies Mawsynram, the wettest place on Earth — a quiet and beautifully green village that receives over 11,000 mm of rainfall every year. The lush, rain-soaked landscape here is absolutely stunning, and the famous Mawjymbuin Cave with its remarkable stalagmite formations is a wonderful attraction to add to your visit.
- Dawki & the Umngot River — A stunning little town on the border of Meghalaya and Bangladesh, about 85 km from Cherrapunji. The star of Dawki is the Umngot River — one of the clearest rivers in the world, where the water is so transparently blue-green that boats appear to be floating on air rather than water. It is one of the most photographed and most magical natural scenes in all of Northeast India.
- Mawlynnong Village — Known as the cleanest village in Asia, Mawlynnong is a beautiful, pristine Khasi village about an hour from Cherrapunji where every lane is spotlessly clean, every house has its own garden, and the community takes great pride in keeping their village a green and welcoming paradise. The Sky View Point here offers a stunning elevated view of the surrounding forest and the plains of Bangladesh beyond.
