Know More About Lachen

Lachen — Where the Mountains Touch the Sky

Hidden away in the far north of Sikkim, close to the Indo-Tibetan border, Lachen is one of those rare places in India that still feels completely untouched by the busy outside world. Sitting at an altitude of 2,750 metres, the name Lachen literally means "Big Pass" in the Bhutia language — and the destination is just as grand as its name suggests. This small and peaceful mountain village, home to just around 250 traditional wooden houses, is surrounded by towering snow-capped Himalayan peaks, misty alpine meadows, and the gentle sound of the Lachen-Chu river flowing through the valley below. Prayer flags flutter in the cold mountain breeze, yaks graze freely on green highland pastures, and the air is so clean and fresh that every breath feels like a gift. Lachen is not a destination for those looking for a busy, commercial trip. It is a destination for those who want to slow down, breathe deeply, and experience the Himalayas in their most raw and honest form. It also serves as the main base camp for visits to some of North Sikkim's most spectacular attractions — including the world-famous Gurudongmar Lake and the breathtaking Chopta Valley. With Ababli Tour, your journey to this extraordinary mountain village will be safe, well-planned, and deeply rewarding.

Top Places to Visit in Lachen

  • Gurudongmar Lake — The crown jewel of Lachen and one of the highest lakes in the entire world, sitting at a staggering altitude of 5,430 metres. Named after the revered Buddhist saint Guru Padmasambhava who is believed to have visited this sacred spot, the lake is holy for Hindus, Buddhists, and Sikhs alike. Its crystal-clear blue waters reflecting the surrounding snow-capped peaks create a view so otherworldly and beautiful that it leaves every visitor completely speechless. Due to the extreme altitude, visitors can only spend 15 to 20 minutes at the lake — but those few minutes are worth every single step of the journey.
  • Chopta Valley — Often called the Valley of Flowers of North Sikkim, Chopta Valley sits at an altitude of over 4,000 metres and transforms into a stunning carpet of colourful alpine flowers during the summer months. The panoramic views of towering Himalayan peaks including Pauhunri are breathtaking and make this valley a true paradise for nature lovers, trekkers, and photographers.
  • Thangu Valley — A beautifully scenic valley about 26 km from Lachen, surrounded by snow-covered peaks, winding streams, colourful orchids, and dense forest slopes. It is extremely popular among trekkers and birdwatchers and also serves as a convenient stopover for travellers heading towards Gurudongmar Lake. During summer, an annual yak race is held at Thangu — a truly unique and memorable cultural experience.
  • Lachen Monastery (Ngodub Choling Gompa) — Built in 1858 by Lama Karchen Dorje Drak, this ancient and deeply spiritual monastery is one of the most important religious sites in North Sikkim. The monastery's stunning Tibetan-style architecture, beautifully decorated prayer flags, spinning prayer wheels, and the statue of Guru Padmasambhava all create an atmosphere of deep peace and spirituality. The annual Mask Dance festival held here every year is a magnificent sight to witness.
  • Tso Lhamo Lake (Cholamoo Lake) — Located just 10 km from Gurudongmar Lake, Tso Lhamo is the highest lake in India and among the highest in the world, sitting at approximately 5,330 metres above sea level. Surrounded by rocky Himalayan mountains and often shrouded in mist, the lake has a hauntingly beautiful and sacred quality to it. A special restricted area permit is required to visit this lake, and Ababli Tour will arrange all necessary permits for you.
  • Lachen Village — The village itself is a beautiful and fascinating place to explore slowly. Walk through the neat rows of traditional wooden homes, interact with the warm and friendly Lepcha and Bhutia communities, visit the local market for handmade shawls, carpets, and handicrafts, and simply enjoy the breathtaking mountain views that surround you on every side.
