Arunachal Pradesh — Where the Sun Rises First in India

Popularly known as the Land of the Dawn-Lit Mountains, Arunachal Pradesh is the first place in India to greet the rising sun every single morning — and that beautiful golden light falling on its snow-capped peaks, deep green valleys, and mist-covered rivers feels like a truly fitting welcome to one of the most extraordinary destinations in the entire country. Sitting at the far northeastern tip of India, bordering China, Bhutan, and Myanmar, Arunachal Pradesh is India's largest northeastern state and one of its most breathtakingly beautiful and least explored destinations. This is a land where towering Himalayan peaks, dense ancient forests, sparkling glacier-fed rivers, and over 500 rare species of orchids all come together in one of the most diverse and awe-inspiring natural landscapes anywhere on earth. But Arunachal Pradesh is not just about its spectacular natural beauty. It is home to over 26 major tribes and more than 100 sub-tribes — each with their own language, customs, traditions, festivals, and ways of life that have been preserved for centuries with remarkable pride and dignity. Walking through an Apatani village in Ziro Valley, sitting quietly inside a 400-year-old monastery in Tawang, watching the first light of dawn touch the frozen surface of a high-altitude lake, or sharing a meal and a cup of millet beer with a warm tribal family in a remote mountain village — these are the kinds of deeply personal and transformative experiences that Arunachal Pradesh offers and that you simply cannot find anywhere else in India. This is not just a destination — it is an expedition. And with Ababli Tour by your side, every step of your Arunachal Pradesh journey will be safe, expertly guided, and unforgettable in every way.

Top Places to Visit in Arunachal Pradesh

  • Tawang — The crown jewel of Arunachal Pradesh and one of the most spiritually powerful destinations in all of India. Perched at an altitude of over 10,000 feet in the far western corner of the state, Tawang is home to the largest Buddhist monastery in India and the second largest in the world — the magnificent Tawang Monastery, founded in the 17th century and home to over 400 monks. The monastery houses a stunning 18-feet gilded statue of Lord Buddha, ancient thangka paintings, priceless scriptures, and the most breathtaking views of the Eastern Himalayas you will ever witness. Tawang is also the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama and a place of deep historical significance — making every moment spent here feel both humbling and deeply moving.
  • Sela Pass — One of the highest motorable mountain passes in the world, sitting at a dramatic altitude of 4,170 metres on the road between Dirang and Tawang. Sela Pass remains blanketed in snow for most of the year, and the sight of the stunning Sela Lake nestled beside it — a perfectly still blue jewel surrounded by white peaks — is one of the most breathtaking and unforgettable images you will carry home from Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Ziro Valley — A UNESCO World Heritage tentative site and one of the most beautiful and culturally rich valleys in all of Northeast India. Surrounded by low pine-covered hills and emerald green paddy fields, Ziro is home to the Apatani tribe — one of the most fascinating indigenous communities in India, known for their unique sustainable farming practices and the distinctive facial tattoos worn by the elder women of the tribe. The valley is peaceful, green, and deeply beautiful at any time of the year and is also famous for hosting the celebrated Ziro Festival of Music every September — a magical outdoor music festival that draws artists and music lovers from across India.
  • Bomdila — A charming and beautiful hill town at 8,000 feet, sitting amidst rolling apple orchards, pine forests, and panoramic Himalayan viewpoints. Bomdila is home to beautiful Buddhist monasteries, traditional Monpa wool weaving workshops, and stunning sunrise views over the snow-capped peaks of the Eastern Himalayas. It is also the perfect and most natural resting point on the road journey from Tezpur to Tawang — and a destination that is thoroughly worth exploring in its own right.
  • Dirang — A quiet and incredibly pretty hill town on the way to Tawang, sitting at around 4,900 feet with pleasant weather throughout the year. Dirang is famous for its natural hot water springs that are wonderfully therapeutic on a cold mountain day, beautiful kiwi and apple orchards, the ancient 17th-century Dirang Dzong fort-village, a fascinating Yak Research Centre, and the stunning Sangti Valley nearby — a peaceful and picture-perfect bowl of green hills, clear streams, and golden wheat fields.
  • Bum La Pass — A high-altitude mountain pass at 15,200 feet, sitting right on the Indo-China border and one of the most thrilling and historically significant destinations in all of Arunachal Pradesh. Standing at Bum La Pass and looking across into Tibet while the biting wind and the sheer scale of the Himalayan landscape surrounds you on every side is an experience of raw, powerful emotion that every adventurous traveller should have at least once in their lifetime. Special permits are required and the pass is open only when weather conditions allow.
  • Namdapha National Park — India's third-largest national park and one of its most extraordinary biodiversity hotspots, spread across a vast 1,985 square kilometres of dense forest in the eastern part of Arunachal Pradesh. Namdapha is one of the only places in the world where all four big cats — tiger, leopard, snow leopard, and clouded leopard — can be found together in the same protected area. It is also home to red pandas, hoolock gibbons, and over 1,000 species of plants and hundreds of rare bird species. A paradise for serious wildlife lovers and nature enthusiasts.

Pasighat is also the cultural home of the Adi tribe and a wonderful place to experience authentic Arunachali tribal life and culture up close.

Best Time to Visit Arunachal Pradesh

  • October to April (Autumn, Winter & Spring) — The best and most recommended time to visit. The weather is pleasant and comfortable, the skies are clear, mountain views are stunning, and most tourist destinations including Tawang, Ziro, and Bomdila are easily accessible. Festivals like Losar (Tibetan New Year) and various tribal celebrations also take place during this period making the cultural experience especially rich.
  • March to June (Spring & Early Summer) — A wonderful time to visit with mild temperatures, blooming rhododendrons, and the most beautiful green landscapes all across the state. The road to Tawang via Sela Pass usually opens up from late March making this the most popular travel window for the Tawang circuit.
  • September to October (Early Autumn) — The famous Ziro Festival of Music takes place in September, making this an especially exciting time to visit Ziro Valley. The monsoon begins to ease, the landscape is lush and green, and the cool, clear post-monsoon weather makes for wonderful travel conditions.
  • June to August (Monsoon) — Heavy monsoon rainfall during this period can make mountain roads slippery and at times impassable due to landslides. Travel to high-altitude destinations like Tawang and Bum La Pass is not recommended during the monsoon months. Some lower-altitude destinations like Pasighat remain accessible and beautifully green during the rains.

How to Reach Arunachal Pradesh

  • By Air — The main gateway to Arunachal Pradesh by air is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, about 180 km from the Arunachal border. Tezpur's Salonibari Airport is much closer at around 60 km from the state border and is the most convenient option for those heading to Tawang and Bomdila. From both airports, private taxis and tour vehicles are available into Arunachal Pradesh.
  • By Train — The nearest major railway station for most Arunachal Pradesh destinations is Guwahati, well connected to cities across India. Tezpur (Dekargaon) and Naharlagun stations are also useful options for reaching different parts of the state. From the railway stations, road journeys into Arunachal Pradesh are the standard onward travel option.
  • By Road — Road travel is the most common and most scenic way to explore Arunachal Pradesh. The state is connected to Assam by several national highways, and most major destinations are accessed by road from towns like Guwahati, Tezpur, and Itanagar. Roads can be winding and mountain-grade so always travel with an experienced local driver and allow plenty of extra time for your journeys.

Important Permit Information

  • Indian Citizens need an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh. This can be applied for easily online through the Arunachal Pradesh government portal or obtained from designated offices in Guwahati, Tezpur, and Itanagar. Ababli Tour will arrange all permits for you as part of your travel package.
  • Foreign Nationals require a Protected Area Permit (PAP) which must be arranged through a registered tour operator. Certain high-altitude border areas like Bum La Pass have additional restricted area permits that Ababli Tour will organise on your behalf.

Quick Travel Tips

  • Always carry original ID documents and multiple copies of your permits at all times — you will encounter several checkpoints throughout your journey in Arunachal Pradesh
  • Mobile network coverage is limited and patchy in many areas — BSNL and Airtel work best in major towns, but carry offline maps and plan accordingly for remote areas
  • Pack warm and layered clothing for every season — even in summer, high-altitude destinations like Tawang and Sela Pass can be extremely cold
  • Allow extra days in your itinerary as a buffer — weather and road conditions in this mountain state can cause unexpected delays at any time
  • Respect local tribal customs and traditions at all times — always ask permission before photographing local people, festivals, or religious ceremonies
  • Try the wonderful local tribal food during your trip — dishes like thukpa, bamboo shoot curry, apong (rice beer), and smoked pork are absolutely delicious and a truly authentic taste of Arunachal Pradesh
